“We're running out of gas mentally and emotionally because we're just pushing ourselves to the limit."
Introduction:
Today, I'd like to talk with you about making sure that you don't run out of gas. I'll be transparent; when I was younger and just learning how to drive, I had my father's hand-me-down as my first vehicle. It was a Ford Bronco, and I was excited to have it. However, as a typical teen, we can be very irresponsible. I would too often see the needle going to “E”, indicating that the vehicle needs gas, and unfortunately, I would take a chance and almost run completely out of gas. After a few admonishments from my father, I realized that I had better stop or I was going to lose the privilege of being able to have free rein with his Bronco. It makes me think today about how so many of us are running out of gas...maybe not in our vehicles, but in our lives and in our bodies!
We're running out of gas mentally and emotionally because we're just pushing ourselves to the limit. I want to share a story with you that I read recently. Many of us are very familiar with the fact that for New Year's, there are all of the amazing and beautiful parades. There was a specific parade called the Tournament of Roses Parade. It was a tradition for New Year's Day. It was held in beautiful Pasadena, CA, and it would just have hundreds of different beautiful flowers on display every year. It is interesting to mention that the theme of the parade was "Be prepared” that year. Well, as the parade was underway, out comes one of the beautiful floats representing the Standard Oil Company.
All of a sudden, the Standard Oil Company float sputters and stops. It holds up all of the remaining floats that are behind it. If you can believe this, the Standard Oil Company float runs out of gas in the middle of the parade. They literally had to have someone run a can of gas to the float to be able to re-start the parade. Now, can you imagine how embarrassing that would be? Imagine what an unbelievable moment that must have been.
However, many of us do it today. We push ourselves to our limits and find ourselves “out of gas”, not even thinking about it. We don’t stop to think about the impact that will have on others, like our fellow coworkers, family members, or the members of our teams.
It's imperative that we do not neglect ourselves and that internal voice inside that reminds us to take a break. We must be mindful, to take time to unplug when needed. You may need to stop and take a walk to clear your head. For me, I try to take a moment to pause and pray. When I spend some time building up my faith, it allows me to keep going by giving me the needed energy or “refueling”. Therefore, I encourage you to pause as well, to ensure you aren’t trying to move on through life while you're running out of gas.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
